As a person of european descent I don't think that the turkish meant to be racist in any way really. By painting their faces black they could be showing an empathy towards admiration just as much as they could be doing what you've argued. Let's not get on the high horse too quickly now yah?

It's all a game if you ask me.

Some white's don't like the idea of some people claiming to be part white (white purity) and some black's in America don't like the idea mulatto's claiming anything but black. But I think it's more than just that because the world is a much more complex place. Nothing is what it appears. If Obama said he was mulatto then I have no doubt everyone out there would see him as such. I think this has more to do with Obama than the media per say. Contrast the media coverage on his racial classification to someone like Meridth Edwards or someone more popular like Tiger Woods. I've never heard them called as black because they made it clear to the media that's not how they identify.

Greetings Sheila,

I think you missed the point of the article. Now, I already said that, "I do not know what this particular video means to the masses of Turks or how it was perceived there." However, I won't concede in believing that the blackface was directly correlated with President Obama's perceived "race." All I was trying to point out was that it is impossible for these groups of people to label Barack Obama as solely black without any outside influences.

Also, you must be using IE. I'll try to fix the "blank space" problem.

P.S. Thanks for pointing out that the article has grammar problems. "Your" an asset to the site. ;)

First off why is it such a big issue if their faces are painted black? Your asking such a generalized question. How about you go over to Turkey and ask the people who painted themselves black for yourself.

I won't disagree on the concept that they are getting 'mulatto' wrong but it's not like people in Turkey are oftenly exposed to mulatto people. Yes it's also a good chance they are reading up on western propoganda (one drp rule yaddy yadda) but still doesn't mean you should be going after them with pitch forks.

What would you say of the dutch who paint their faces black each year to celebrate the dutch santa clause, the one who scares children?
